1600-century chronicler Hans Nielsson Strelow has a long story about how Olav came to Gotland in order to Christianize the island and how the King first goes ashore alone and wander around the island for acquiring knowledge. He walks to the farm Kyrkebys in Hejnum where he was revealed, without disastrous results, since the master of the house there is a Christian. The farmer at Kyrkebys urge Olaf to Christianize the island and the king let his army go ashore and at Laikarhed in Lärbro where the Gotlanders were defeated. Thereafter Olav’s troops ravaged the island until the farmers promise to be baptized. After completion of the Christianizing Olav stayed on Gotland over the winter and allowed the building of a church at St. Olof Holm.
